Lauriel F. Dalier is counsel in Sterne Kessler’s Trademark & Brand Protection Practice. As a former Examining Attorney at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), she has a unique understanding of Trademark Office practice and draws upon her depth of experience to navigate clients through the complexities of registering their trademarks and protecting their brands. For nearly two decades, Lauriel has focused on providing strategic counsel to her clients across industries, including technology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, finance, entertainment, telecommunications, consumer products, hospitality, and food and beverage.
Lauriel specializes in strategic brand counseling and trademark prosecution, filing U.S. and international trademark applications and managing U.S. and global trademark portfolios for companies at all stages of development, from innovative start-ups to multinational corporations. She also has extensive transactional experience, and works with clients to draft and negotiate licensing, coexistence, and settlement agreements.
Clients turn to Lauriel for her strategic approach to the protection and enforcement of their trademarks and brands, specifically the unique technical insights she offers clients who are developing and using new technologies. As a trademark examiner, she often reviewed trademark applications for evolving technologies. In particular, Lauriel has experience advising clients on how to safeguard artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, arrange licensing agreements, and handle the legal and regulatory complexities surrounding AI. She also provides strategic trademark counsel to clients using technology to advance drug discovery, audio and video development and streaming, social media, gaming, retail, and cannabis.
In addition, Lauriel is often called upon to provide clearance, infringement, and non-infringement opinions, and has significant experience consulting clients on and handling ex parte and inter partes proceedings before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board. Her enforcement work also includes letters of protest, petitions, and Office Action responses at the USPTO.
Lauriel was recognized in the 2026 World Trademark Review 1000 for her “sharp, business-savvy advice and secure robust protection for her clients” and in the 2025 edition for how she “leverages her deep knowledge of Trademark Office practice to expertly guide clients through the complexities of trademark registration and brand protection.” Lauriel was also named in the 2025 World Intellectual Property Review (WIPR) USA Trademark Rankings and as a 2024 “WIPR Leaders” for trademarks.
As an active member in the trademark community, Lauriel currently serves on the Trademark Office Practices Committee for the International Trademark Association and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. She shares her expertise on trademark trends, case law, and changes in practice guidelines through speaking engagements in publications.
Born in Puerto Rico, raised in the U.S. Virgin Islands and Costa Rica, and educated in the U.S. and various other countries, Lauriel has a unique multi-cultural perspective. She is fluent in Spanish and is proficient in French. Lauriel has a J.D. from the Columbus School of Law at The Catholic University of America and a double B.A. in International Relations and Economics from American University.
