Michael Nathanson is an associate in the Mechanical & Design Practice Group where he assists in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications and assists with patentability, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate analyses. His primary areas of technical experience include: aerial vehicles and systems, defense technology, collision avoidance systems, composite materials, consumer products, and sporting goods.

Before joining Sterne Kessler, Michael was a patent agent for a major golf club manufacturer, and was an engineer within the aerospace industry, where he developed airborne collision avoidance systems for commercial airliners and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). As an engineer, Michael specialized in early product development, including algorithm development, requirements drafting, modeling/simulation, and testing for new alerting systems that enhance runway safety and help integrate UAVs into the National Airspace System.

Michael holds a J.D. from the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University, where he won Best Patent Owner Response in the National PTAB Moot Court Competition. Michael also holds Bachelor’s degrees in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona, where he was the Outstanding Senior in Mechanical Engineering. Additionally, Michael holds a professional certificate in C/C++ programming from the University of California, San Diego.

Outside of his practice, Michael is a licensed pilot and enjoys introducing new passengers to general aviation.
