Jean Selep is a patent agent in Sterne Kessler’s Electronics Practice Group. They assist in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications for electronics and software related technologies as well as litigating patents in IPR proceedings. Jean has technical experience in semiconductors, communication systems, video encoding, streaming video, data compression, database management, and Internet applications. Jean is particularly interested in helping clients navigate the enforceability and effect of standard essential patents. Additionally, Jean is interested in helping clients navigate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.
During law school, Jean volunteered at UC Irvine’s Community and Economic Development Clinic where they gained experience in registering trademarks and navigating regulatory requirements for food services operating in California. Further, Jean did research on the DMCA with an eye towards the intersection of copyright jurisprudence and technology. They also did research on how courts consider websites different from physical media in the copyright and First Amendment contexts. Jean additionally served as the Treasurer of the LGBTQIA+ law society, OutLaw.
Prior to law school, Jean worked as a technical specialist at a Chicago-based law firm where they worked on patent applications and office actions. During their undergraduate studies, Jean was a member of the Engineers for a Sustainable World and worked on designing a solar system to power an outdoor work station. Further, Jean worked on designing computer accessibility devices for their senior design project.
Jean received their J.D. from the University of California, Irvine School of law, cum laude, and their B.S. in Computer Engineering and B.A. in Radio/Television/Film from Northwestern University.
