Deepa J. Shiwcharan, Pharm.D., is a patent agent in Sterne Kessler’s Biotechnology & Chemical Practice Group. Her practice includes the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign utility patent applications and patent litigation in United States district courts. She also assists in the preparation of opinions of counsel including patentability, non-infringement, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate analyses. Her technical areas of expertise include biopharmaceuticals, therapeutic antibodies, biosimilars, prescription and OTC drugs, infectious diseases, generic drug development, medical devices, and chemical products.

Deepa received her J.D., cum laude, from the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. While in law school, she was a member of the Hofstra Law Review and also served as the Social Media and Outreach Coordinator of the Health Law Society. Her Note, entitled Purple or Pink: Time to Rethink the Availability of Promethazine with Codeine, was selected for publication in the Hofstra Law Review and earned her the Hofstra Law Review Alumni Writing Award. During law school, Deepa gained experience working in-house in pharmaceutical, medical device, and non-profit companies and as an intern in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York for the Honorable Jennifer E. Willis.

Prior to attending law school, Deepa received her Pharm.D., summa cum laude, from Long Island University and is a licensed pharmacist in New York State. While in pharmacy school, she conducted a retrospective study on the association between cystic fibrosis patients and depression, which was presented at the 34th Annual North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference, and the abstract of which was published in Volume 55 of Pediatric Pulmonology.

Deepa received her B.A. in Chemistry with minors in Mathematics and English and American Literature from New York University.
