Timothy "Tim" Schwarz is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His practice focuses on worldwide patent prosecution and portfolio management, strategic patent counseling and due diligence, and patent office litigation.
Tim prepares and prosecutes patent applications covering mechanical, electromechanical, and biomedical technologies. He advises on offensive and defensive patent strategies tailored to client’s needs. He conducts patent landscape and freedom-to-operate searches within a variety of industries including medical devices and industrial manufacturing. Informing and guiding clients’ management, Tim drafts opinions regarding patentability, invalidity, and infringement.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Tim was an associate with an Am Law 100 firm in D.C. and a boutique firm in Northern Virginia where he counseled domestic and international clients ranging from solo inventors to large corporations.
During law school, Tim served as an examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office, where he examined patent applications directed to aerospace technologies. Tim’s time as an examiner provided a depth of understanding regarding patent office procedure and the patent application process, which he employs to the benefit of his clients.
As a young engineer, Tim had the opportunity to work for a big three automotive manufacturer researching and developing electrocatalysts for fuel cell vehicles. This formative industry experience ignited a passion for innovation that he nurtures today by serving clients at Sterne Kessler.
