Matthew “Matt” T. Swazer, Pharm.D., is an associate in Sterne Kessler’s Biotechnology & Chemical Practice Group. He focuses on patent preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign matters.
Matt assists with drafting patent applications, responding to Office Actions, and conducting patentability and freedom-to-operate searches to help clients identify and address intellectual property challenges. He also supports the preparation of opinions of counsel evaluating patent validity and infringement risks. He additionally supports patent litigation matters before the PTAB and ITC. Matt monitors how changes in regulatory exclusivity and approval pathways affect patent portfolio development.
His expertise includes small-molecule pharmaceuticals, including prescription, OTC, and generic drugs, as well as biologics such as therapeutic antibodies and biosimilars. He also has experience with consumer products, including cosmetics.
Matt earned his J.D. summa cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law, where he served on the Michigan State Law Review.
Before law school, Matt worked as a community pharmacist, where he saw firsthand how patents affect drug availability and pricing. He holds a Pharm.D. from Purdue University with minors in biological sciences, international pharmacy, Spanish, and Latin American & Latino studies. He also earned an M.B.A. from Louisiana State University—Shreveport and maintains Project Management Professional (PMP) and Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP) certifications.
