John W. Sterling, chief marketing officer, has over 30 years of experience in the areas of marketing and strategic management. At Sterne Kessler, he is responsible for marketing, communications, business development, client relations, and business strategy for the firm and its practices. He leads a team of marketing and communications professionals focused on extending the firm's visibility and recognition as thought leaders in IP law. John also leads a team of business development and client relations professionals focused on delivering maximum value to the firm's clients.
John brings extensive law firm strategy and marketing experience to the firm along with a background helping corporations with strategic planning, marketing planning and market research. That experience includes strategic management, market research, and market planning assignments for dozens of law firms and/or their respective practice groups. He is the author of three books Strategic Planning for Law Firms: A Practical Roadmap; Strategic Planning for Law Firms: A Practical Roadmap (2nd edition); and Balanced Scorecards for Law Firms.
John is a past President of the Association for Strategic Planning - Chicago Chapter, the Strategic Management Association in Chicago, and the Strategic Leadership Forum. He is also a Contributing Editor to Strategy & Leadership, a leading strategic management journal.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, John was a founding partner of Smock*Sterling Strategic Management Consultants, was a senior consultant with Ernst & Young's Great Lakes Strategic Management and Marketing Group, and was a senior policy analyst at The University of Illinois at Chicago.
