Jiajia “Janie” Cai, Ph.D., is a patent agent in Sterne Kessler’s Biotechnology & Chemical Practice Group, where she assists in patent preparation and prosecution matters. Her technical areas of expertise include organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical process, polymer chemistry, material science, petroleum chemistry, and nanotechnology.
Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Janie was a senior scientist in an international energy company where she conducted research in the areas of developing surfactant polymer technologies and nanomaterials in enhanced oil recovery and hydraulic fracturing applications for unconventional reservoirs.
Janie received her Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Texas at Austin. During her doctoral studies, she focused on applying anion binding receptors in transporting anions across cell membranes to gain insight into diseases such as cystic fibrosis. She also developed novel transition metal-based catalysts that can be active in ring-opening metathesis polymerization. Janie earned her B.S. in chemistry from Nankai University in China. During her undergraduate training, she conducted research in developing porphyrin-metal complexes for anticancer drug study.
