Hansel “Alex” Hobbie, Ph.D., is a technical specialist in Sterne Kessler’s Electronics Practice Group. Alex supports the firm’s patent prosecution practice with many years of experience in research and technical writing paired with a multidisciplinary knowledge of engineering concepts and principles. His immediate areas of technical expertise span 3D printing (notably printed electronics), solid state devices, semiconductor fabrication, electronic materials, medical devices, and electromagnetics applications (e.g., antennas, metamaterials, simulation/modeling).
Alex received his Ph.D. in electrical and computer engineering from Duke University. Alex’s dissertation focused on a 3D printing innovation he developed that enabled further research on printing solid state devices with novel electronic materials. Prior to his research in printed electronics, Alex studied applied electromagnetics, including the design and development of radio and microwave frequency antennas and circuit components. Alex also studied electronics uses for biomedical applications and, in particular, used 3D printing to add sensing capabilities to catheter balloons. During his time at Duke, Alex gained experience in patent prosecution by working at the university’s tech transfer office for a number of years.
