Calvin Mendel is a Patent Agent in Sterne Kessler’s Biotechnology & Chemical Practice Group. His practice includes preparing and prosecuting of U.S. and foreign patent applications. Calvin also assists in patentability, validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate analyses.
Calvin obtained his J.D., magna cum laude, from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law. While at Indiana Law, he worked in utility and design patent prosecution at Indiana Law’s Intellectual Property Law Clinic. Calvin also served as a member of the S. Jay Plager Intellectual Property American Inn of Court.
Prior to attending law school, Calvin graduated from Northwestern University, double majoring in Biology and Chemistry. During his college years, Calvin’s research was focused primarily on combinatorial chemistry and synthesis of small molecules as part of the lead drug discovery process. He interned at Eli Lilly and Company and also worked at Indiana University Indianapolis in the “D3” (Distributed Drug Discovery) program to generate leads against neglected tropical diseases through solid-state peptide synthesis. Calvin also has postgraduate experience in bioinorganic chemistry, focusing mainly on oxygen tolerance in hydrogenases.
