Overview

Solymar Rolón-Martínez, Ph.D., is a Technical Specialist in Sterne Kessler’s Biotechnology and Chemical Practice Group. Solymar assists in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications. Her technical areas of expertise include Neuroscience, Computational Neuroscience, Electrophysiology, and Molecular Biology.

Solymar received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Pennsylvania and was a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the University of Pennsylvania. Her thesis and postdoctoral work focused on investigating the role of excitatory-inhibitory circuits that shape responses to auditory stimuli within the auditory thalamus. She used a combination of viral-vector tracing, optogenetics, electrophysiology, and computational methods to probe her questions on thalamic inhibition.

Before her Ph.D., Solymar received her M.S. in Anatomy from the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus, where her research combined the fields of Neuroscience and Parasitology. She focused on understanding how neuropeptides in the nervous system of fresh water snails that serve as intermediate hosts for the parasite that causes Schistosomiasis, are altered through the parasitic stage. She earned her B.S. in Biomedical Sciences from the InterAmerican University of Puerto Rico-Metropolitan campus.

Solymar has technical expertise in AAV-mediated anatomy, large-scale neural recordings & analysis, programming (MATLAB & Python), optogenetics, chemogenetics, microscopy, image analysis, 2-photon calcium imaging & analysis, histology, in-situ molecular detection, and rodent behavioral assays.

Solymar has authored and co-authored multiple peer-reviewed scientific articles. She is bilingual in Spanish and English.
