Overview

Chase Hammond is a director in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His practice focuses on the preparation and prosecution of utility and design patent applications in the US and abroad. He has experience preparing and prosecuting applications in the fields of materials science, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. Specifically, he has experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in technology areas including consumer products, optical lenses, light emitting diodes, electrochromics, batteries, glass, glass ceramics, athletic apparel, athletic equipment, beverage dispensing systems, agricultural systems, and medical devices.

Chase’s practice also includes counseling clients on existing patent rights. He has prepared invalidity opinions, performed patent landscape and freedom to operate analyses, and worked on due diligence investigations. He also has experience in post-grant proceedings including ex parte reexaminations and inter partes reviews.

Chase is a PTAB Legal Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP) participant. The program provides associates with training and development opportunities in PTAB proceedings, including oral argument.

Prior to joining Sterne Kessler, Chase examined patent applications at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for four years in Technology Center 1700. He examined applications related to various topics including analytical test devices and sensors, medical devices, automatic analyzers, control systems, batteries, and fuel cells.

Chase holds a Bachelor’s Degree in materials science and engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech University). During his time as an undergraduate, he published two articles related to freeze casting micro-scale surface features using nanoparticle suspensions and performed research related to optical fibers and polymer coatings. He also has experience in contact lens manufacturing and ceramic body armor research. Chase earned his J.D. from George Mason University School of Law.
