Overview

Alexander R. Covington is counsel in Sterne Kessler’s Mechanical & Design Practice Group. His work focuses on the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign utility applications. Alex has experience preparing and prosecuting applications in a variety of arts, including consumer products and processes, food and beverage making processes, industrial equipment and processes, physiological sensor systems, polymer chemistry, material science, chemical processes, and various clean technologies.

Alex is a PTAB Legal Experience and Advancement Program (LEAP) participant. The program provides associates with training and development opportunities in PTAB proceedings, including oral argument.

Alex’s practice also focuses on patent landscape, patentability, and freedom-to-operate analyses to counsel clients on offensive and defensive patent strategies. Alex also provides technical support on litigation matters, including infringement analyses. While attending law school, Alex served as a publication editor for the North Carolina Journal of Law and Technology. Additionally, he worked as an intern in the patent prosecution group of a global specialty chemical company that develops and manufactures chemicals, fibers, and plastics.

As an engineering student, Alex worked as an engineering co-op at a consumer packaged goods company specializing in paper-based products and as an engineering intern at a nonprofit research institute. As part of a design project, Alex worked with a team to design a waste tire pyrolysis facility.

Alex received his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law and his B.S. in chemical engineering, magna cum laude, from North Carolina State University.
