Director Daniel A. Gajewski‘s article, “Utility Model Examination in China is Quietly Changing,” was published by IPWatchdog.

The editor notes that according to WIPO’s World Intellectual Property Indicators 2017 and 2018, “Around 95% of the world’s utility model applications are filed in China, totaling more than 50% of the number of utility patent applications filed worldwide…” and “…reports show the number of regular patent applications in China filed by U.S.-based applicants increasing by about 14% from 2016 to 2017.” Daniel goes on to examine the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)’s utility model system, what has changed about the system, and its future impact on patent seekers.
