New digital designs are posing new challenges, but also opportunities, for industrial design protection systems across the world. Industrial design protection laws are currently being amended in various jurisdictions to provide an effective protection for these designs. Representatives from the USPTO and the EUIPO—along with brand owners and design law practitioners—came together to discuss how various jurisdictions are protecting new 2D digital designs, including graphical user interfaces (known as GUIs), and digital designs in the metaverse.
