Giving back is an important part of the culture at Sterne Kessler.  We aim to touch the lives of those less fortunate in our local communities and in far off places.  Because our team is made up of people with a diversity of talents, we've been able to reach out and make a difference in many ways.

Through our pro bono program, we've lent assistance to deserving organizations and underserved sectors of both the D.C. and world communities.  Here are a few examples of how we've helped:

• Independent Inventors Conference sponsored by the USPTO- providing volunteer inventor assistance
• Discovery Creek Children's Museum of Washington - trademark protection
• Operation Second Chance - trademark protection
• National Working Group on Maca- protecting indigenous Peruvians from biopiracy
• The Family Court Self-Help Center - providing general legal information in a variety of family law matters such as divorce, custody, visitation and child support

Through our charitable committee, we've supported the New York Fire Fighters Disaster Relief Fund with an old fashioned bake sale, brought joy to local families by sprucing up homes with Rebuilding Together and smiles to animals in search of new homes at the D.C. Humane Society, and reacted quickly to support families devastated by Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Indonesia, the 2008 earthquake in China, and Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar.

The list is long, here are just a few of the other organizations we've had the honor to support:

• Men Against Breast Cancer is committed to mobilizing men to be active participants in the fight to eradicate breast cancer as a life threatening disease by encouraging men to get involved in helping the women they love battle the disease. Their Survival Skills For Men program for husbands/male partners of women with breast cancer provides education and counseling to assist men in being effective support partners and coping with breast cancer when it strikes their families. Their National Mammography Program provides access to early detection and treatment for low-income, under served and uninsured women.
• The Salvation Angel Tree Program was created so all children can experience the magic of the holiday season. The program allows individuals and partnering corporations to personalize g by adopting "angels" and purchasing clothes, toys and books for each child.
• Global Camps Africa was created to provide a camp experience for children affected by HIV/AIDS in developing countries and to change prevailing attitudes and behaviors towards AIDS.  This includes children who have family members that are HIV+ as well as children who are HIV+ themselves.  At camp, we impart HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention, as well as crucial life skills to the children.
• Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit with a network of nearly 225 affiliates across the United States.  It's mission is to preserve affordable housing by bringing volunteers and communities together to rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners.
• Whitman-Walker Clinic is a non-profit community-based health organization serving the Washington, DC metropolitan region.   Established by and for the gay and lesbian community, the Whitman-Walker Clinic is especially committed to ending the suffering of all those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.
• National Wildlife Federation's mission is to actively educate and inspire everyday Americans about the achievable solutions to confronting global warming, protecting and restoring wildlife habitat, and connecting their families with nature.
• Bread for the City's mission is to provide vulnerable residents of Washington, DC, with comprehensive services, including food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services, in an atmosphere of dignity and respect.  It is recognized that all people share a common humanity, and that all are responsible to themselves and to society as a whole. Therefore, they promote the mutual collaboration of clients, volunteers, donors, staff, and other community partners to alleviate the suffering caused by poverty and to rectify the conditions that perpetuate it.
• Airline Ambassadors International (AAI) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization affiliated with the United Nations and recognized by the US Congress. It began as a network of airline employees using their pass privileges to help others and has expanded into a network of students, medical professionals, families and retirees who volunteer as "Ambassadors of Goodwill" in their home communities and abroad. It provides a way for members to share their unique skills and talents to care for others and bring compassion into action.
